by Ched Follis California drivers dominated on Sunday’s final rounds for the Briggs-powered Super Regional 4-stroke race at Shasta Kart Klub’s Redding facility. All karters were challenged by Saturday’s dry-wet-dry conditions for practice and qualifying. FKR’s Jeff Janders stood out with P5 in the master’s 206 class, against some of the best in the west (and beyond). Monroe Jordan was P10 after being slowed by another kart on his money lap, and Kevin Janders slotted in 14th for Sunday’s Senior 206 pre-final. We were hoping for rain, as the guys were confident with the experience they’ve had in the wet this year. I think we raced or tested six times in a row in the wet this winter. Unfortunately, although threatening, the track was dry for Sunday’s pre-finals and finals. All three drivers had a strategy for the races and were looking forward to moving up their pre-finals and planning on a good start for the final. Jeff was up first. After the start, Jeff settled into the 4th through 8th group. This was the most competitive group in the race and there were some tremendous battles. After falling back to 7th, he was able to pass two karts with a couple laps to go and finish 5th. A good starting spot for the final. With a fresh tune and great start, he was hoping to hang with the top three, who had checked out in the race. Kevin and Monroe had a strategy and were hoping for a couple breaks (not brakes) to help them improve their position for the final. Monroe drove a great race and finished P6. Kevin threw a chain and DNF’d and would be starting 27th in the final. In Jeff’s final, it started in a similar fashion as their previous race. Jeff settled into the second group as frontrunners Mike Smith and Brian Rivera checked out again, followed by Jereme Abshire. Racing again was hot in the second group with great dicing and many passes. Jeff’s kart started going away about halfway through and he realized he’d gone the wrong way with the set-up. He pulled in with a few laps to go to give Kevin and Monroe a heads-up so they’d have time to change their karts. Mike Smith finished P1, Rivera in second, and Abshire P3. Monroe and Kevin were at somewhat of a disadvantage due to their starting positions They’d have to use separate strategies in the final. Kevin made an unbelievable start. The field got stacked up and spun out in front of him and he passed 14 karts in the first 2 turns (crazy, huh!)… then the race ended for him in turn 3 as two karts spun in front of him and front-end damage did him in. It was a great effort and he would actually finish in P14 out of 27 karts. Monroe had better luck and slotted back in the second group and raced his way into a 5th place finish. Jeoff Shaw was P1, Blake Milton P2, and Jess Peterson P3. He was racing around some very talented drivers and did a masterful job of moving his Italkart into a top five. This event placed the top five finishers on the podium, so we ended the day with a podium, a great experience, and some new friends. All in all, a great time. ![]() Follis Kart Racing would like to thank the Shasta Kart Klub, the KPX series, all the vendors and support staff, and most importantly, Dan Pellizarri.
